Wyoming East's win over Westside was served on a trey.
The Class AA No. 1 Warriors hit 12 three-pointers and beat arch rival Westside, 75-45, on Monday night at New Richmond.
It was a typical tussle between the two, East coach Rory Chapman indicated. "It wasn't pretty to watch," he said. "It was physical, grueling. (Westside) played us pretty tough."
The Warriors used flurries of points to maintain a comfortable lead, but the Renegades kept things interesting until late.
"The score wasn't indicative of the kind of game it was," commented WHS coach Nick Cook. "It was a 15-16 point game most of the way."
Chase Morgan's hot hand in the opening minutes pushed East in front. He hit from 17 feet, knocked down threes from the left side and the top of the key and then added another off a feed from Evan Muscari. It was 11-2.
Muscari's trifecta from the right side and Andrew Bishop's 10 footer from the lane extended the lead to 20-7.
"We've got the shooters with Chase and Evan and Alex (Webb)," Chapman noted. "And Andrew and Marcus (Schofield) are bangers inside."
The Renegades cut it to 20-11, on Dylan Newsome's three-pointer and a Dustin Tilley foul shot, by the end of the first quarter.
Schofield had a steal and layup to and a put back in a 9-0 run as the margin ballooned to 29-11.
Luke Campbell's three from the left corner gave the Warriors their biggest first half lead, 37-15. Westside scored the last six points of the half, including buckets inside from Cody Toler and Tilley.
"From the second quarter we on, we played with them pretty well," Cook noted.
The second half repeated the pattern. East would score quickly, then go quiet for a while as WHS nibbled at the margin.
"I knew they might throw some different defenses at us," Chapman said. "They used a box and one, a 1-2-2 (zone)."
Webb stroked two threes early in the third and another at the buzzer as East took a 50-32 advantage into the final stanza.
Bishop sank two free throws and converted a three-point play early n the fourth as the Warriors began to take the ball inside.
"I told the guys to make the extra pass and take the ball to the rim a little bit," Chapman remarked.
Morgan had 29 for East, including six threes. Webb scored 11 (all in the second half), and Bishop had nine. Trey Fralin (6), Muscari (5), Campbell (5), Schofield (4), Emerson Branham (4) and Zach Foley (2) also scored.
Justin Tilley, who sat out much of the first half with foul trouble, paced Westside with 16. Newsome scored 13. Dustin Tilley (5), Cody Toler (4), Chris Gravley (3) and Zach Helmandollar (2) also entered the score book.
Game notes: Westside coach Nick Cook says his team will finish its makeup games this week. “That way we can get back to a normal schedule in February, and I think that will help us,” he said . . . East won for the seventh straight time against the Renegades and drew even, 10-10, in the all-time series for the first time ever.
