Huggins, other celebrities to appear at anti-drug event

Celebrities, including WVU basketball coach Bob Huggins, Bimbo Coles and singer Landau Murphy, will be at Wyoming East High School this Thurday to take on the Drug-Free All-Stars.

The event features a drug and alcohol-free message and will start at 6 p.m. Admission is free, and students who attend will be provided with school supplies.

Former NBA player Chris Herren will be a guest speaker. He is the founder of the Herren Project, a non-profit foundation that assists a families and individuals struggling with addiction.

Herren played for the Boston Celtics but lost everything to addiction. His memoir, Basketball Junkie, was released last year. He has been drug and alcohol-free since Aug. 1, 2008.

Herren also supports the Purple Project, in which students and others wear purple to stand against substance abuse.

Well-known participants at this Thursday’s event will include Mountain State basketball coach Bob Bolen, Sen. Mike Green, former WVU basketball player Joe Mazzulla, who led the Mountaineers over Kentucky in the 2010 Elite Eight game, and others.

Congressman Nick Rahall will also be a speaker at the family-oriented event.
