Winter weather: Be prepared

Dean Meadows, Wyoming County’s Director of Emergency Services, has one message for county residents: Be prepared.

While the National Weather Service has reduced the snow accumulation totals it is predicting for the area, the county remains under a winter storm warning.

A rain and sleet mix has been falling in Pineville this morning and is expected to turn to snow some time Thursday afternoon.

“We want people to take preparations in case of power outages and if travel would be limited due to snow,” Meadows said. “Only travel if you have to.

“My main hope is that people will check on folks who are elderly or less fortunate or have special needs and keep a close check on them at a time like this,” he added.

Experience seems to have been a good teacher for local residents.

“In the last couple of severe storms, there has been great improvement in prepartions,” Meadows stated.

Current predictions call for most of the county to get 2-4 inches of snow today with an additional inch or less tonight.
