Hundreds turned out for the fourth annual Wyoming County Egg Drop in Oceana on Saturday afternoon.
A helicopter, courtesy State Sen. Chandler Swope, flew over the Oceana Middle School football field several times, showering an estimated 10,000 eggs stuffed with goodies to the children below.
A chance of rain was in the forecast, but conditions remained warm and dry for the event.
“It was great,” said Kathy Brunty, an event organizer, as she looked out over the field at children collecting eggs. “The kids are having a blast.”
About 70 volunteers helped with the egg drop. “We couldn’t do it without them,” Brunty stated.
Wyoming County SADD, the Prevention Coalition, MountainHeart and Power House Youth Center served as sponsors.
The event also raised awareness of Child Abuse Prevention Month.
“It’s a great day,” Brunty commented.
She thanked Swope for donating the helicoper and fuel for event use.
“This is amazing,” said Brunty.
The Easter Bunny also made an appearance at the field.
Sidney Lambert, 19, has been playing the part for three years.
Lambert said she orginally found out about the need for volunteers from Brunty.
“She and I go to the same church, New Life at Jesse,” Lambert remarked.
“They were looking for volunteers, and I knew I wanted to do it,” she stated.
“I love doing it and I love kids,” Lambert remarked. “It’s a lot of fun.”
Lambert says she looks forward to playing the Easter Bunny every year.
“As long as I’m in the area, I want to continue to do it,” she said.
